We’ve all heard this saying before: “It isn’t rocket science!” Well, that saying rings loud and true when it comes to social media. If you are visiting this site you probably are seeking some answers as to how you can best implement a social media strategy for your business or brand. Let me tell you, one of the biggest mistakes that I see individuals making when trying to coordinate a “social media campaign” is treating our fans and followers with the mind set of old media.
This may be a shocker, but social media is a lot like dealing with real people in the real world. Have you ever gotten a birthday card with only a signature on the inside? How does that limited-effort make you feel? Pretty unimportant, right? Well, social media without personal connections comes across the same way.
The internet is a strange critter. We’ve all heard of or been victims to the email scams, mountains of insincere e-blasts, false promises and other negative manifestations on the web today. People have grown skeptical and are continually refining their BS meters with tools that are becoming more and more sophisticated in dealing with “our noise.” The only way for us as marketers to break through the noise and into the hearts and minds of the customer is by building relationships which take a certain level of sincerity in how we deal with things online. In other words, it is time to actually start caring.
Are you going to simply pay social media lip service by buying a cheap card and signing it? Or are you going to take the time communicate in a way that others will view as relevant and thoughtful? Take the time to build relationships and you will build a future filled with appreciation, respect and ultimately, conversion.

I think your analogy is dead on and something everyone can relate to. Way to put things into the right perspective.
